How Much Is A Serving?
Is a serving of cooked vegetables half a cup or one cup? How about a serving of pasta? If you're struggling with the answers to those questions, you're right there with the majority of Americans. According to American Dietetic Association’s 2002 nutrition trends survey, the majority of Americans overestimate what a serving size is. This is a possible explanation as to why so many Americans consume more calories than they need.
For ease in remembering serving sizes, use these examples:A serving of pasta or cooked vegetables is the size of a tennis ball, cut in half.
A serving of cooked meat, fish or poultry is the size of a deck of cards.
A serving of leafy vegetables is the same size as a tennis ball.
Knowing what a serving size should be can make it easier to control the amount of food we actually consume.
